INSIDE EDITION has the latest on the police investigation of the Long Island serial killer.
Dr. Peter Hackett's wife, Barbara, is breaking her silence, speaking out on Good Morning America to say her husband is not the Long Island serial killer and had nothing to do with the disappearance of missing prostitute Shannon Gilbert.
A reporter outside the Hackett home asked Barbara, "Would he ever hurt anyone?"
"No way. He's a great guy. The only thing he's guilty of is being late to dinner. We've never met her. We've never treated her. We don't treat rehab patients here," said Barbara.
Gilbert's mother reportedly claims Dr. Hackett, the former head of the county's emergency medical services, called her saying that he ran a halfway house and that Shannon was there.
Shannon vanished a short time later. Her body has not been found on the stretch of beach outside New York City where the remains of 10 other women have been discovered.
The police say the doctor is cooperating and they don't consider him a suspect, or even a person of interest.
And could another man hold the key to finding the serial killer? He knows what's going on inside the killer's mind because he is a serial killer himself.
Joel Rifkin slaughtered 17 young women in New York City and Long Island before his killing spree came to an end in 1993.
"You think of people as things," said Rifkin in an earlier interview.
Now cops say a new serial killer is following in Rifkin's notorious footsteps. Both preyed on prostitutes on Long Island. Both hid the bodies in secluded areas, in water, if possible, where evidence would be washed away.
"Water is harder to investigate than land because it washes everything," said Rifkin.

Rifkin is serving a prison sentence of more than 200 years. Now police are hoping to put the new monster behind bars too before he kills again, as Rifkin says he surely will.
"I don't have any doubts," said Rifkin.
