So where is the dress today?
INSIDE EDITION found it right in the heartland of the U.S. in Kansas City, Missouri.
The dress is on display at a special Princess Diana exhibit at Union Station Museum, which is filled with her personal artifacts.
Diana's gown features delicate embellishments of lace and pearl, and a ruffled collar with a bow in the center. The large puff sleeves are accented with ribbons. The layers of tulle underneath create a large, full skirt. Most remember the dress for its 25-foot-long detachable train.
Just like all eyes are on Kate Middleton today, 30 years ago the world wanted to know what Diana would be wearing.
Diana chose a little-known British designer, Elizabeth Emmanuel, who was just out of design school when she created Diana's iconic gown.
It turned out the carriage that carried Diana to the church was too small to hold her 25-foot-long train.
It looked a little like she slept in it when she arrived, but as she walked down the aisle the wrinkles seemed to vanish.
Unfortunately the marriage did not last, but the dress lives on as will whatever Middleton chooses to wear on her big day.
