A Georgia teen died in what is being called a freak accident after a tree that was connected to the hammock she was resting in fell on her, authorities said.
Joelle Dalgleish, 15, had traveled to Red Top Mountain for a camping trip to celebrate a friend’s 16th birthday on Friday, loved ones told WSB-TV.
She was lying in a hammock that was secured to a tree when the tree snapped in half and landed on her, officials said.
Dalgleish was rushed to Cartersville Medical Center and was sent to a trauma center in Chattanooga when she was stabilized. But she died on Sunday.

News of the teen’s death hit the community hard, as she was remembered as a generous and kind girl.
“It’s been very difficult,” said Kent Simmons, who coached her in cross country running.
Grief counselors were made available to students at Harrison High School in Kennesaw, where Dalgleish was in 10th grade.

“Joelle brightened the lives of everyone she encountered,” Simmons told reporters. “She laughed easily and made friends easily. She was fun, sweet, goofy and curious. We were blessed to have been a part of her life and to have had her in our lives. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends.
“She was easy to laugh and loved interacting with people. And everybody who met her felt comfortable around her … she was a real special person to be around.”
A vigil was slated to take place Monday evening, while a funeral for Dalgleish is scheduled for Thursday.
