Blair Myhand was sworn in days earlier.
A North Carolina police chief nearly became a victim himself recently after cops say three would-be burglars entered his home last week.
Blair Myhand and his wife were home at the time of the alleged burglary attempt, which occurred just three days after he was sworn in as Clayton's chief of police.

Though the incident occurred at about 4 a.m., Myhand admits his back door had been left unlocked.
He told WTVD that his instincts kicked in as he grabbed his gun when he realized someone was in his home.
"I am not going to allow my wife to be harmed," he said.
Myhand reportedly fired at one of the suspects but missed.
However, police say Myhand soon caught 24-year old Jerome Richmond and 21-year old Abdul-Hakeem Muhammad.
Both are charged with first-degree burglary.
Police also arrested Raquicia Laquandra Reams, 23, who is charged with the same crime. Police believe she was driving the getaway car.
Reams is held in lieu of $225,000 secured bond while Muhammad and Richmond are held on $260,000 and $275,000 bonds, respectively.

As for Myhand, he's regarded the encounter as a lesson learned.
"I did exactly what I tell everybody not to do and I left my back door unlocked because we got complacent," he said.
