Think U.S. Elections Are Strange? Lord Buckethead, Elmo, Mr. Fishfinger Seek Votes in U.K.

The British elections ended in a stalemate.

While Great Britain's general election was a close contest between Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn Thursday, a few other candidates stole the show.

Candidates like self-described “intergalactic space lord” Lord Buckethead, a person dressed as Elmo from Sesame Street, a man named Mr. Fishfinger (who dressed up as a life-size fish stick), and a gentleman named Howling “Laud” Hope of the Monster Raving Loony Party, all campaigned for votes.

Lord Buckethead, surprisingly, is no stranger to U.K. politics. The candidate, who wears a black leather suit, adorned with a black and silver cape, leather gloves, and a massive bucket over his head that inspires the name, has ran in the past.

Lord Buckethead, who received 249 votes Thursday, ran against Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in 1987 and then again in 1992 against Prime Minister John Major.

Thursday night's vote was his return to the British political fray.

His Twitter feed has photos of him dabbing onstage as he stands among the other candidates, as well as his “manifesto.”

Morning! No, you didn't dream it. I stood on a stage with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. (And I did a dab). #anewdawnhasbroken pic.twitter.com/Qj4Gk2Fqzi

He even gained support from British filmmaker, Shaun of the Dead director Edgar Wright, as well as The Wire creator David Simon.

I am delighted to know that in a mythical place called Maidenhead, a British Prime Minister shares a stage with a certain Lord Buckethead.

Lord Buckethead was not the only unorthodox candidate Thursday night as a person in an Elmo costume was on the ballot. However, the beloved Sesame Street character only got three votes.

Howling “Laud” Hope of the Monster Raving Loony Party is the longest-serving political leader in the U.K. and has never won an election. His party was created 15 years ago and he has been the head of it since. He took in 119 votes.

But intergalactic space lords, party politicians and Elmo were almost no match for Mr. Fishfinger, a man dressed as a frozen fish stick.

When Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron spoke Thursday, Mr. Fishfinger was seen photobombing his speech and interrupting. Farron got 777 votes, enough to keep his seat, and Mr. Fishfinger wasn’t too far off with 309 votes, beating out Elmo and Howling “Laud” Hope.

The British elections ended in a stalemate and May said she will now work with the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) to form a new government.
