Uber Offering Free Rides to Las Vegas Blood Donation Centers

The ride-sharing service and its competitor, Lyft, are both making it easier to get around Sin City in the wake of Sunday's massacre.

Uber is making it a little bit cheaper to get around Las Vegas in the wake of Sunday's music festival massacre.

As hundreds line up to donate blood and pitch in with what promises to be a long recovery for victims and the city itself, the ride-sharing app says it's offering free rides to and from donation centers.

"Our hearts ache for everyone affected by this senseless tragedy," the San Francisco-based company said in a statement. "We stand ready to support the victims and the Las Vegas community as they recover from this devastating act.

"Shortly after hearing about the incident, we worked to ensure all rides from around the affected area were free of charge. Additionally, we are providing free rides to and from area hospitals, the family reunification center, and United Blood Services donor centers for those who wish to donate blood."

Uber's competitor, Lyft, announced that it would be lifting its surge pricing in the wake of the tragedy.

"We're heartbroken," the company said in a statement. "Our thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones. We suspended Prime Time immediately after we understood what was happening. We also communicated to drivers about the developing situation.

"In addition to this, Lyft announced later on Monday it was offering free rides of up to $40 with the code "VEGASHOPE" to several blood donation centers, relief centers and hospitals in Las Vegas," Lyft said.

The announcements came amid a massive fundraising and blood donation push in Sin City and nationwide after 64-year-old Stephen Paddock fatally shot at least 59 concertgoers and injured more than 500 others at the Route 41 Harvest country music festival Sunday night.

Donation centers in the Las Vegas area were packed with hundreds looking to give blood to those in need in the aftermath of what has become the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

Among the many donation centers that are open locally, United Blood Services is also accepting donations from a variety of banks across the U.S., and thousands of units of blood are currently being transferred to the state, reports said.

A GoFundMe campaign has also been started by Clark County Commission Chair Steve Sisolak, to raise funds for the victims of the shooting.

The campaign’s initial goal was $500,000 but, as of Tuesday afternoon, $3.5 million in donations had poured in with a stretch goal of $4 million.
