Verny, which means "faithful" in Russian, was a gift from the president of Turkmenistan.

As a belated birthday present, Putin, a known dog lover, was presented with a puppy by the president of Turkmenistan on Wednesday.
"We have a common friend,” President Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov said, according to The New York Times. “This is the world's unique alabai dog. And today I brought this little alabai with me.”
Berdymukhamedov then lifted the pup from its cage by the scruff of its neck, and handed it to the Russian president.
Putin, who celebrated his 65th birthday on October 7, named the puppy Verny, which means “faithful” in Russian.
The rare breed, a variety of the central Asian shepherd, is native to Turkmenistan and is considered part of the country's heritage.
Verny is the just latest in a line of puppies political leaders have gifted Putin in previous years.
Yume, a 5-year-old Akita, was a gift from Japan to thank Russia for aid that was sent to the region following the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and subsequent tsunami.
Buffy, a Karakachin shepherd native to Bulgaria, was given to Putin during a visit to the nearby country in 2010.

"As far as bad moods go, of course I have them like any other person, but in those cases I try to consult with my dog Koni – she gives me good advice,” Putin said in a previous interview, referencing a black Labrador gifted to him by Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.
