INSIDE EDITION talks to Phillip Garrido’s ex-wife about her life with the man who would go on to abduct Jaycee Dugard after their divorce.
She's the woman who was married to a monster. Christine Murphy's first husband was Phillip Garrido, Jaycee Dugard's kidnapper.
INSIDE EDITION's Diane McInerney sat down with Murphy for an interview.
"What's wrong with him?" asked McInerney.
Murphy replied, "He's a monster."
Murphy and Garrido were high school sweethearts in Northern California. But there were early signs that he was no Prince Charming. Garrido was accused of raping a teenager while Murphy was dating him. She believed him when he told her the teen was lying.
McInerney asked, "Why did you marry him?"
"I was in love with him," said Murphy.
A photo of Murphy from 1973 shows what she looked like when they eloped—filled with optimism about the future. But she told McInerney life with Garrido quickly turned into a nightmare.
"He was very controlling and started hitting me," said Murphy.
"He abused you?" asked McInerney.
"He smacked me. Told me to grow up," she said.
Just 19 years old when they married, Murphy worked at a Reno, Nevada casino to pay the bills because Garrido, an aspiring musician, had no real income. She says he took LSD or smoked marijuana every day, and that he became violent when she refused to go along with his depraved sexual fantasies.
"What did he want you to do?" asked McInerney.
"Multiple partners, and I wouldn't go for that," said Murphy.
One day, Garrido thought he saw another man flirting with his wife. Murphy says he took out a safety pin and dug it into her face.
"He left a scar," she said.
And when she ran away, Garrido carried out what was in all likelihood his first kidnapping.
"He pulled up in front me and threw me in the car," said Murphy.
Four years into the marriage, Garrido was convicted of kidnapping and raping Katie Callaway. He served 11 years in prison.
"How did you react?" asked McInerney.
"Honestly, relieved. It was my exit out," said Murphy.
We asked Murphy what she thought of Garrido's second wife, Nancy, who acted as her husband's accomplice in Jaycee Dugard's 18 years of hell.
"Do you think Nancy Garrido could have been brainwashed by Phillip Garrido?" asked McInerney.
"You still know as a human being right from wrong," she said.
Neighbors knew Nancy as a somewhat mousy bookkeeper. But a home video, obtained by ABC News, showed she's no shrinking violet as she harangued a parole officer searching their house. Jaycee and her daughters were 30 feet away in the backyard.
"What does a parole agent do for his parolee?" asked Nancy.
"Ma'am you can come in the office and we'll discuss that, all right? At an appropriate time. Right now I'm doing a search. If you stay in this front room, then I don't have to place you in restraints," said the parole officer.
As the officer left, Nancy had the nerve to continue her badgering.
"Well he's an arrogant little guy, isn't he?" said Nancy.
After her divorce from Garrido, Christine Murphy remarried and had four children. She says she had one reaction when she heard her ex had imprisoned Jaycee Dugard for nearly two decades.
"It made me sick to my stomach," she said.
