A commercial staring singer Mary J. Blige for Burger King's fried chicken meal is serving up a lot of controversy. INSIDE EDITION has the story.
An ad for Burger King's crispy chicken meal starring Mary J. Bilge is being called offensive by some people.
The singer was paid a reported $2 million to sing about Burger King's crispy chicken wrap.
Now, TV talk show host Wendy Williams is ridiculing the ad.
Williams said on her show, "The way she does it. There's just something about black people singing about fried chicken that is very, very embarrassing."
The ad is part of a campaign to promote Burger King's new menu selections. Jay Leno, Salma Hayek and soccer stud David Beckham have all appeared in the commercials. But only Blige focuses on the fried chicken.
The backlash on social media has been fierce.
One person wrote on Twitter, "Mary J. Blige singing about chicken. I'm still in a state of shock."
Advertising Age said the ad is "Awful and...plays into racial stereotypes."
But not everyone has a beef.
The Talk's Aisha Taylor said, "You should be able to eat what you want, you should be able to do what you want, without the burden of judgement."
Burger King pulled the ad Wednesday but said the decision is over music rights, not racial insensitivity.
"Burger King enlisted a diverse cast of A-list celebrities representing the many faces of the American melting pot. Mary J. Bilge is just one of the celebrities," a statement said.
And they promise Mary J Blige will be back.
