Kerry Kennedy says she doesn't remember a thing about the terrifying drive down a highway that resulted in her arrest for driving while impaired.
The daughter of the late Senator Bobby Kennedy reportedly told police, the powerful sleeping pill Ambien could have been to blame.
"All she remembers is feeling very woozy, and then the cops were there," says a family source.
They're known as "Ambien Zombies," seemingly awake, but with no idea what they're saying or doing.
Kerry Kennedy was driving her Lexus down a highway outside New York City on her way to play tennis Friday morning. Other motorists called 911 to report a dangerously erratic driver who had sideswiped a tractor-trailer. Police found Kennedy stopped at the bottom of an exit ramp with a flat tire. She was slumped over the steering wheel.
According to reports, Kennedy said she could have popped an Ambien by mistake instead of her thyroid medication. But some medical experts are expressing skepticism.
Dr. Stuart Fischer told INSIDE EDITION, "Does a thyroid pill look like an Ambien pill? No. Almost all pills look different and it's the responsibility of the patient to know which pill is which."
She was cited for driving under the influence of drugs. A family spokesman insists: "Kerry Kennedy voluntarily took breathalyzer, blood and urine tests—all of which showed no drugs or alcohol whatsoever in her system. The charges were filed before the test results were available."
A source close to the Kennedys says she may have suffered "some sort of seizure" due to a "previously undiagnosed medical condition."
Kennedy's arrest comes just two months after her best friend and sister-in-law, Mary Kennedy committed suicide.
Kerry is the ex-wife of New York Governor Cuomo. They divorced in 2003.
