A teenager sobbed hysterically after running down an elderly doctor in a freak accident.
"It was an accident, please leave me alone, it was a mistake, stop, it was a mistake," she wailed.
18-year-old Kayla Gerdes was allegedly high on OxyContin when the van she was driving ran off the road and across the lawn of a house on Long Island, New York.
The van hit and killed a 69-year-old retired doctor as she was mowing the lawn. It then plowed into the doctor's house.
Gerdes was charged with manslaughter. Tears fill her eyes in her mug shot.
As she left court, she sobbed to reporters. "I'm so sorry, it was a mistake, I didn't mean to do it, please leave me alone!"
She could still be heard wailing, even after the police car doors are closed.
Incredibly, when the crash happened, Gerdes was on her way to court to answer a criminal charge of stealing jewelry from her own mother.
"I am very sorry for the family, and for this horrible tragedy," said her mother, Tara Gerdes.
Even more unbelievable, she allegedly consoled herself with the fact that the woman she ran down was elderly.
Cops quoted her as saying, "The thing that made me not feel so bad was, she was old. 70 years is a long time to live."
A wannabe model, Gerdes was reportedly so self-absorbed after the crash, she asked cops for newspapers to see how she looked.
The victim's son, Chaunchey Twine, was stunned that his mother, Rebecca Twine-Wright, an avid gardener, died on her own front lawn. "For her to die right in the middle of doing something she loved to do...It's just horrible," he said.
Gerdes pled not guilty. She is being held on $200,000 bond.
