"Killed them all, of course."
The billionaire many believe has gotten away with three separate murders was arrested over the weekend on murder charges, just hours before an apparent confession he made aired on HBO.
Robert Durst was apprehended in New Orleans based on evidence shown in the six-part HBO documentary, The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst.
Cross-dressing Robert is the black sheep in one of New York’s wealthiest families, The Durst Organization, which manages One World Trade Center.
In the final episode, which aired Sunday night, Robert Durst was confronted with a letter, evidence that almost certainly helped lead to his arrest.
In 1982, his beautiful wife, Kathleen McCormack, vanished without a trace and has yet to be found. Then, his close friend, Susan Berman, was found shot to death execution style at her house in Los Angeles, shortly before she was to be questioned about Kathy’s disappearance.
Police have long suspected that Robert Durst was the author of an anonymous note sent to the Beverly Hills Police Department alerting them to a body at Susan Berman's home. But they've never been able to prove that he wrote the note, possibly until now.
In the documentary, Susan Berman's stepson showed a producer a different letter from Robert Durst to Berman that he says he just discovered.
The block lettering appeared to be identical to the lettering on the note sent to police and Beverly Hills was misspelled on both notes.
The filmmaker, Andrew Jarecki, confronted Robert Durst with the two incriminating letters.
Jarecki said, “So, you wrote one of these but not the other?”
Robert replied, “I wrote this one but not that one.”
Jarecki asked, “Can you tell me which one you didn't write?”
“No,” he replied.
But after the interview was over, Robert retreated to the bathroom, apparently not realizing his microphone was still on, and made an eerie statement in the final moments of the documentary.
"There it is. You're caught. What a disaster. What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course,” he said.
Jarecki said his crew didn't realize what they'd recorded until two years later.
The Los Angeles Police Department, along with the FBI, traced Robert to the lobby of a hotel in New Orleans on Saturday night and arrested him for Susan Berman's murder.
He was staying in room 2303 under the made-up name Everett Ward and paid more than $2,500 in cash. The FBI believes Robert Durst may have been trying to flee the country, possibly to Cuba.
Robert’s own brother, Douglas, released this statement upon hearing of his brother's arrest: "We are relieved and also grateful to everyone who assisted in the arrest of Robert Durst. We hope he will finally be held accountable for all he has done."
By agreeing to take part in HBO’s The Jinx, the eccentric Robert Durst may have just jinxed himself.
