The singer came under fire for his choice of gift.
Luke Bryan’s wife didn’t even have to open her Christmas present – it just hopped right out.
The country singer and “American Idol” judge gifted his wife, Caroline Boyer, not one, but two baby kangaroos for Christmas.
“I got you two designer purses,” Bryan joked in a video on Instagram before Boyer took off her blindfold to find two tiny joeys inside a sack.
The pair was later named Margo and Todd after the neighbors in “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation."
According to Bryan's Instagram post, the kangaroos were apparently a new addition to Brett’s barn, which is located on the family's property.
It was created as a home for rescued and abandoned animals in tribute to the couple's late niece, Sadie Brett, who was just 7 months old when she passed away earlier this year.
Residents of the barn include a goat named Goober Goldsby, several miniature horses, pigs, and donkeys.
However, many are criticizing the couple for their latest additions.
“Shame on you for taking these animals out of their natural environment for your pleasure,” one commenter wrote on Instagram.
Another wrote: “Kangaroos are not pets nor farm animals, they belong in the wild […] plus these are two new born joeys. They need their mother’s pouch for the first year.”
Others are criticizing them for putting diapers on the kangaroos.
Bryan and his wife have not yet commented as to whether the kangaroos were rescued or purchased from a breeder.
PETA Vice President Colleen O'Brien is calling for an official investigation.
"Baby kangaroos belong in their mothers' pouches, not in gift bags," O'Brien said in a statement. "These joeys have complex needs, including specialized diets and room to roam—they are not toys and will only become more difficult to care for as they grow older."
