As the trial for Amber Guyger got underway, prosecutors argued she was distracted when she got to her apartment building because she had been texting her police partner, with whom she was in a sexual relationship.
The trial for Amber Guyger, the former Dallas cop accused of fatally shooting a black man in his own apartment she says she mistook for hers, has brought to light some revealing, intimate text messages she sent that night.
Guyger's lawyers argue that on the night of Sept. 6, 2018, she simply made a mistake when she arrived at her apartment building after a 13-hour shift. They say a tired Guyger thought she was walking into her own apartment when she walked through neighbor Botham Jean's door. Mistaking him for an intruder in her home, they say, she shot him in self-defense.
But the prosecution used intimate texts she sent that night to question the defense's argument. Prosecutors revealed messages Guyger sent to her police partner, with whom she was having a sexual relationship, in the hours before the shooting. In one message, she told him she was "super horny today."
Prosecutors also showed a Snapchat message Guyger sent him that read, "Wanna touch?"
The two also shared a 16-minute phone conversation on her way home from work.
Then, after prosecutors say Jean was shot, Guyger sent another set of texts to her partner that read, "I need you. Hurry." and "I f***** up." Prosecutors say that text was sent while she was on the phone with 911.
Guyger is charged with murder and, if found guilty, faces life in prison. She has pleaded not guilty.
