Across America's cities, 6,791 people were murdered in 2017, according to the Major Cities Chiefs Association Violent Crimes Survey.
Here are murder rates in 62 major urban centers across the U.S. based on 2017 figures, ranked in order from the city with the lowest murder rate to the city with the highest murder rate.
The murder rates are calculated per 100,000 residents, based on the most recent population data for each city.
62. Suffolk County, New York (Murder Rate: 1.5)
Twenty-two people were murdered in Suffolk County in 2017. That's down 50 percent from the previous year.
61. Fairfax, Virginia (Murder Rate: 1.7)
Nineteen people were murdered in Fairfax in 2017.

Twenty-one people were murdered in Montgomery County in 2017.
