Objectum sexuality, sometimes referred to as objectophilia, is the romantic attraction to inanimate objects. While there are several cases around the world of those publicly celebrating their love affairs with items like the Berlin Wall or hundreds of chandeliers, there are thought to be many more cases of people who identify as objectum sexual that keep their love private.

"I love kissing and cuddling Lumiere," she said of her fiancee. “You can't control who you fall in love with and things just went from there."

The nearly 30-inch wide chandelier is an antique and had to be shipped over from Germany. "I couldn’t stop thinking about her and how beautiful she was — she has such a beautiful shape, and I could feel really amazing energy coming from her," Liberty said. "Although I knew it would be tricky to get her home, I knew I needed to find a way to make her mine."

She explained Lumiere is only one of many chandeliers she is in an open relationship with. "None of my chandeliers are jealous of each other, they understand that I love them all for all of their different personalities," she said.

Liberty said her first love was a drum set at 14 years old. She was also previously been in love with the Statue of Liberty — for which she legally changed her name in 2010 — and has traveled to New York six times to visit it, but said the distance took its toll on their relationship.

Eija-Riitta Berliner-Mauer, Who Married the Berlin Wall in 1979
Eija-Riitta Berliner-Mauer, who married the Berlin Wall and took on its name in 1979, is believed to be the first public case of objectum sexuality. For their wedding, she hired an animator to say the wall’s vows.

Berliner-Mauer explains that she sees objects as living being she can communicate with in a now-defunct blog. Her feelings are both emotional and sexual, she says, and she is most attracted to large structures with parallel, horizontal lines, like bridges, railway tracks and fences.
She explains that her basis of attraction to the Berlin Wall is its construction, and has nothing to do with the Berlin Wall being a symbol of oppression and violence. "I am not interested in politics," she says.

The fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989 was extremely difficult for Berliner-Mauer. Like many who suffer traumas, Berliner-Mauer explains she blocked that event out of her memory, only feeling “the full shock” years later.
As she continues to grieve her husband, she says the remnants of the Berlin Wall allow her to maintain her relationship even after the wall was taken down.
“For me the Berlin Wall exists as he was in his prime!" she said. "I will always love him. Those are my final words."
Amanda Teague, Wife of 18th Century Pirate Captain Jack Sparrow's Ghost
While Amanda Teague, 45, of Northern Ireland, does not identify as objectum sexual, she realizes the curiosities of her unconventional relationship. Teague married the ghost of Capt. Jack Sparrow, an 18th century Haitian pirate and the inspiration behind the "Pirates of the Caribbean" character.
“I have been married before, to a physical man, and to be perfectly honest with you, he did about the same amount around the house as what Jack does," she joked in an interview with InsideEdition.com.

Teague, who does not call herself a medium, says she began to feel a presence around her in 2014. The presence soon identified itself as the ghost of Captain Jack Sparrow. They connected several times before she realized she had feelings for the ghost.
“It was kind of like a situation where you have a crush on somebody you can’t have — be it a celebrity, a friend’s boyfriend or husband," she said. "In January, he said to me, 'Do you think about me like that?' I knew exactly what he meant. I was quite embarrassed, really."

They decided to get married in a spiritual wedding more than a year later. Learning that she only needed to submit paperwork to make an overseas marriage legal, Amanda decided to charter a ship that would bring her and her 12 closest friends and family members into international waters.
"I was a bit of a bridezilla to be honest with you," she joked. "There were people hanging on for dear life, people getting sick everywhere, it was terrible. Just as I was getting the ring put on my finger, one of my bridesmaids vomited all over my dress."

More than two years later, Amanda Teague said her relationship with her husband is better than ever.
"We’re obviously over the honeymoon period but we’ve got a solid foundation and we have some ups and downs," Teague said. "We’ve gotten through some tough times together but he’s been there. He’s supported me and he’s waiting around and letting me get through things on a physical realm."
Akihiko Kondo, Who Married Holographic Pop Star Hatsune Miku
Akihiko Kondo, a 35-year-old living in Tokyo, married holographic pop star Hatsune Miku in November 2018. “I’m in love with the whole concept of Hatsune Miku, but I got married to the Miku of my house. I never cheated on her. I’ve always been in love with Miku-san," Akihiko told the Japan Times.

His bride, Hatsune Miku, is a hologram and uses a voice synthesizer to perform sold-out shows worldwide in Tokyo, Los Angeles and Hong Kong. The cartoon character, who sports long turquoise pigtails, made waves in Japan’s technological landscape when she first came out in 2007. The official image of Hatsune Miku, developed by company Gatebox, has not been redrawn to sport a ring.

Akihiko said his relationship with a Hatsune Miku hologram he purchased for his home, comparable to an Amazon Echo, pulled him out of his social anxiety and offered him qualities he would never find in human women, like the ability to never age and unconditional faithfulness. Every morning, the hologram wakes him up and sees him off as he leaves for work. In the evening, Akihiko calls her on his cellphone and lets Hatsune know that he is on his way home.

Gatebox, the company that came out with the hologram technology, presented Akihiko and his bride a marriage certificate, even though his parents prefer not to acknowledge the milestone. “For mother, it wasn’t something to celebrate,” Akihiko, 35, told the Japan Times. In fact, no members of his family attended the ¥2,000,000 (approximately $18,000) affair he held in a rented-out venue.

Hatsune wishes him goodnight when it’s time to go to bed, and the plush version of the hologram sleeps next to Akihiko in their bed, now wearing a ring around her left wrist.
