The Royal Line of Succession: 59 Brits in Line for the Throne

Prince Charles, the eldest son of Queen Elizbeth II, has been the heir apparent since 1952, when his mother ascended to the throne. 

Prince William, the first son of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, is next in line after his dad.

He doesn't appear to like the spotlight, but 4-year-old Prince George is third in line for the crown.

Princess Charlotte, according to her great-grandmum, Queen Elizabeth II, likes to run the show. 

Prince Louis, Prince William and Kate Middleton's newest arrival, is right behind Charlotte. 

Prince Harry is sixth in line, after Louis. 

Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle welcomed their first child, a baby boy, on May 6, 2019. The child, whose name has not yet been shared with the public, is seventh in line to the throne. 

Prince Andrew, the second son of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, is eighth in line. 

The eldest daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson is currently ninth in line.

The youngest daughter of Prince Andrew is right behind her older sister. 

Prince Edward is the youngest son of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip and according to a now-defunct rule, jumps ahead of his older sister, Princess Anne, because he is a male. 

James is the youngest child and only son of Prince Edward. He turns 10 in December.

Louise, James' older sister, is behind her brother in ascendancy because the Succession to the Crown Act wasn't enacted until 2015. 

Princess Anne, Queen Elizabeth's only daughter, is 14th in line for the throne. 

The eldest and only son of Princess Anne is just behind his mother in the line of ascension. 

Seven-year-old Savannah Phillips is 16th in line and is the queen's first great-grandchild. She is the daughter of Peter Phillips. 

Isla Phillips, second from the right, is 17th in line behind her big sister, Savannah. 

Born Zara Phillips, she is the daughter of Princess Anne and 18th in line to the throne, after niece Isla.

The daughter of Mike and Zara Tindall, Mia Tindall was born on Jan. 17, 2014, and is 19th in the line of succession.

Lena Tindall is the second daughter of Mike and Zara Tindall (pictured above) and was born on June 18, 2018. She is  20th in line to the throne. 

David Armstrong-Jones, the second Earl of Snowden, is the son of Princess Margaret and Antony Armstrong-Jones, first Earl of Snowdon, and thus is the nephew of Queen Elizabeth. When he was born, he stood fifth in line for the throne, but is now 21st.

Pictured here with his father, Charles Armstrong-Jones is the only son of David Armstrong-Jones and Serena Armstrong-Jones, Countess of Snowdon, and is the great-grandson of King George VI. Though he is 22nd in line for the throne, he is heir apparent to the earldom of Snowdon.

Lady Margarita Elizabeth Rose Alleyne Armstrong-Jones is the only daughter and youngest child of the Earl and Countess of Snowdon and a great-granddaughter of King George VI. Her second middle name, Rose, is said to have been chosen by her brother Charles. Here, she is seen with her father. 

Lady Sarah Frances Elizabeth Chatto is the daughter of Antony Armstrong-Jones, first Earl of Snowdon and Princess Margaret, as well as a niece of the queen. At birth, she was seventh in line for the throne, but is now 24th. She is a professional painter, represented by Redfern Gallery.

Samuel Chatto is the son of Lady Sarah Chatto and Daniel Chatto. He is 25th in line for the throne.

Arthur Chatto stands directly behind his brother, Samuel, in line for the throne. Due to his participation in the Combined Cadet Forces while a student Eton College, Arthur is expected to join the army after he graduates from the University of Edinburgh. Prince Richard was an architect until his oldest brother died, leading him to be placed in direct line to inherit his father’s dukedom of Gloucester. He is 27th in line for the British throne and the first person in the line of succession who is not descended from King George VI.

Major Alexander Patrick Gregers Richard Windsor is the son of the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester. Because he is heir apparent to the dukedom of Gloucester, he’s been given the title Earl of Ulster, but is commonly known as Alex Ulster. He works as as a director of the Transnational Crisis Project and is 28th in line for the throne.

Xan Richard Anders Windsor, son of Alexander Windsor and Claire Windsor (pictured above), was born in London in 2007. He is second in line for the dukedom of Gloucester and 29th in line for the throne, after his father. He will be given the title Earl of Ulster once his father becomes the duke.

Lady Cosima Windsor, born in 2010, is the younger sister of Xan and 30th in line for the British throne. Her parents are pictured above.

Lady Davina Elizabeth Alice Benedikte Lewis, the eldest daughter of Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester, and Birgitte, Duchess of Gloucester, grew up in Kensington Palace and then graduated from the University of the West of England with a degree in media studies. She is 31st in line for the throne.

Because of the British monarchy’s 300-year-old Act of Settlement, Senna Lewis, born in 2010, was originally behind her younger brother, Tane, in line for the British throne because the act gave sons priority over daughters. However, thanks to the Succession to the Crown Act of 2013, Senna was moved in front of her brother in line, to 32nd.

Tane Lewis, son of Lady Davina Lewis (pictured above pregnant with Tane in 2012) and Gary Lewis, was named after the Tane Mahuta, a large kauri tree native to New Zealand.

Lady Rose Victoria Birgitte Louise Gilman, Lady Davina’s younger sister, works in the film industry under the name Rose Windsor. She works as an art department assistant and has worked on films including “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” and “Margaret Thatcher: The Long Walk to Finchley.” She is 34th in line to the throne.

Like her cousin Senna Lewis, Lyla Beatrix Christabel Gilman (born in 2010) originally fell behind her younger brother, Rufus, in line for the British throne because of the Act of Settlement, but was moved in front of him after the Succession to the Crowd Act 2013 took effect. Born in 2012, Rufus Frederick Montagu Gilman, son of Lady Rose and George Gilman, is one step behind his sister, Lyla, in line for the throne at 36th.

Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, is first cousins with the queen, as his late father, Prince George, was King George VI’s brother. Prince George died in a plane crash in 1942.

George Windsor, Earl of St. Andrews, is the oldest son of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent. George was given the title Earl of St. Andrews because he is heir apparent to the dukedom of Kent. He is 38th in line for the throne.

Lady Amelia Sophia Theodora Mary Margaret Windsor is Prince Harry and Prince William’s third cousin. She works in fashion and modeling, and walked in Milan Fashion Week in February 2017 for Dolce & Gabbana. She is 39th in line for the throne.

Albert Louis Philip Edward Windsor's father, Lord Nicholas Windsor, gave up his right of succession to the British throne after converting to Catholicism in 2001. Here, Albert is pictured with his mother, Lady Nicholas Windsor. He is 40th in line for the throne.

Leopold Windsor is 41st in line for the throne. Here, he's pictured with his mother, Lady Nicholas Windsor. 

Louis Windsor, the youngest child of Lady and Lord Nicholas Windsor (pictured above), is said to have been called a “miracle” because he was conceived when Lady Windsor was 44. He is 42nd in line for the throne.

Lady Helen Marina Lucy Taylor is the only daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Kent as well as the great-granddaughter of King George V. One of her nicknames when she was younger was “Melons” because, according to her, she used to be “slightly chubby.” Above, she is seen with her husband, Timothy Taylor.

Columbus George Donald Taylor is the first child of Lady Helen and Timothy Taylor, and 44th in line for the throne.

Cassius Taylor is the second child of Lady Helen and Timothy Taylor. He is 45th in line for the throne.

Eloise Taylor is the third child and first daughter of Lady Helen and Timothy Taylor. Though the Taylors live a rather private life compared to many other members of the royal family, they attend most major royal events. Above, she is pictured at right with her younger sister, Estella.

Estella Taylor is the youngest child of Lady Helen and Timothy Taylor. She is the first cousin twice removed of the queen. She is 47th in line for the throne.

Prince Michael of Kent is one of the queen’s first cousins and was born seventh in the line for the throne. Now, however, he is 48th. He mostly works in consulting, but also sometimes represents the queen at functions outside the United Kingdom.

Lord Frederick Michael George David Louis, who goes by Freddie, is the son of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent. He works as a financial analyst at J.P. Morgan in London.

Maud Elizabeth Daphne Marina Windsor is the daughter of Lady and Lord Frederick Windsor (who is pictured above with his sister, Lady Gabriella Windsor). Born in 2013, Maud is 50th in line.

Born in 2016, Isabella Windsor is the daughter of Lady and Lord Frederick Windsor. When christened at Kensington Palace at 5 months old, she was dressed in the same lace christening robe that Prince George and Princess Charlotte wore for their respective ceremonies. Pictured above is her father.

Lady Gabriella Windsor is the daughter of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, and 52nd in line for the throne.

Princess Alexandra is the youngest granddaughter of King George V and Queen Mary, and is one of the queen’s first cousins. Because she was a male-line granddaughter of King George, she was styled as a British princess when she was born, having the prefix Her Royal Highness. James Ogilvy is the oldest child of Sir Angus Ogilvy and Princess Alexandra of Kent. He is 54th in line for the throne.

Alexander Ogilvy is the son of Julia and James Ogilvy. He was born in Edinburgh in 1996 and is 55th in line.

Flora Ogilvy, born in 1994, is the daughter of Julia and James Ogilvy. She is the founder of Arteviste and a lecturer at Sotheby’s.

Marina Ogilvy is the daughter of Princess Alexandra and Angus Ogilvy. She married Paul Julian Mowatt in 1990, but the two divorced in 1997.

Christian Mowatt, born in 1993, is the son of Marina Ogilvy and Paul Mowatt. Though he has no royal duties, he attends some royal events such as weddings and the Trooping the Colour. He is seen above with his sister, Zenouska.

Zenouska Mowatt, sister of Christian Mowatt, was born in 1990. She attended the private school St. George’s in Windsor when she was younger. She is 59th in line for the throne. Above, she is seen with her parents.
