The astonishing gift was distributed several years ago during dinner at his home.
George Clooney may be the world's most generous friend.
The Ocean’s 11 star once bestowed a million dollars in cash to each of his 14 best buddies.
His close pal, Rande Gerber, Cindy Crawford's husband, made the revelation on MSNBC’s show Headliners this week.
"There’s a group of guys we call 'the boys,'" he recalled. "George had called me and 'the boys' and said, 'Hey, mark Sept. 27, 2013 on your calendar. Everyone's going to come to my house for dinner,”
Gerber didn't name names but they're believed to include his groomsmen. Among those in the close-knit group are Curb Your Enthusiasm and Spin City star Richard Kind and actor/producer Grant Heslov.
In front of each guest was a black TUMI suitcase. Addressing the gathering, Clooney poured his heart out.
"George begins to say, 'Listen, I want you guys to know how much you've meant to me and how much you mean in my life. I came to LA. I slept on your couch. I'm so fortunate in my life to have all of you and I couldn't be where I am today without all of you. So, it was really important to me that while we're still all here together, that I give back. So I want you all to open your suitcases,'" Gerber recalled.
"Every one of us — 14 of us — got a million dollars," Gerber said. "Every single one of us, we're in shock. Like, what is this?”
Gerber says he actually told Clooney he didn't want to take the money.
Clooney then made an announcement saying: “If Rande doesn't take the million dollars, nobody gets it.'"
Gerber relented, but he said he ultimately donated his cash to charity.
Clooney also paid the tax obligation on the gifts.
