Georgia Parents Who Hired Black Baby Sitter Say They Were Stunned Cops Were Called

The baby sitter is like a member of their family, the parents said.

A white couple in Georgia say they couldn't believe their black baby sitter was followed by a woman who called police about him driving around with their two children.

David Parker and Dana Mango told "Good Morning America" Wednesday that an officer called them to double-check that Corey Lewis was authorized to take care of their son and daughter.

"We were at dinner and I saw that Mr. Lewis had called," Mango said. "I called back and a police officer answered the phone. The police officer was trying to explain that he was there with my kids and that they were OK, but he wanted to confirm that I had given permission to Mr. Lewis to be with them."

The conversation stunned him.

"It truly took me several minutes to believe that it was real. I was just in a state of disbelief," Mango said.

The strange story began Sunday when Lewis was out shopping with the children, ages 6 and 10. A white woman approached them in the parking lot of a Walmart, according to the baby sitter.

"She pulled up to my vehicle and asked if the kids were all right," Lewis told the network. "I responded with, 'Why wouldn't they be?'"

"She then said , 'Things look weird,' and then she drove off," he said. Later, he said he saw the woman was following them. That's when he began recording with his cellphone.

When the group got home, an officer showed up, responding to a 911 call made by the woman. He, in turn, called the parents.

“The officer was actually apologetic," Mango told the outlet. "I think he was embarrassed. He saw what was happening pretty quickly, and after he spoke to me and confirmed that everything was all right, he let them go.”

The children were worried for Lewis, their mother said.

"They were scared that they would say the wrong thing and cause him to get arrested," Mango said. The kids consider Lewis part of the family.

“After this ordeal on Sunday night the first thing the kids asked was, ‘When can he come baby-sit us again?'" Mango said.
