Belgian Nuns Brew Spelt-Based Beer in Order to Save Their Convent
December 26, 2021
A few years ago, Benedictine nuns of the Maredret Abbey in Belgium fell on hard times. This group of 20 nuns saw cracked walls and leaking roofs in their convent, so they teamed up with a brewer and created a beer. The result has been what the nuns might call a ‘financial blessing!’ Their beer is made with spelt, a cereal grain highly regarded by one of their order’s patronesses, St. Hildegard of Bingen.
