Protesters Try to Topple Andrew Jackson Statue Outside White House
June 23, 2020
Police faced off with protesters in Lafayette Square, across the street from the White House, as a statue of Andrew Jackson was nearly pulled down with ropes and chains. Police used chemical irritants on protesters in an attempt to disperse the crowd. Jackson’s statue was targeted due to his life as a brutal slave master and colonizer who was responsible for the Native American “Trail of Tears.” He is also Trump’s favorite president; he keeps an Andrew Jackson portrait in the Oval Office.
