Statue of Founder of Canada’s Notorious Residential Schools Toppled in Toronto
June 7, 2021
Protesters in Toronto toppled a statue honoring a man linked to the deaths of thousands of Indigenous children. The statue is the likeness of Egerton Ryerson, and until recently, it stood outside Ryerson University, in Toronto. Ryerson created Canada’s Residential School System. The schools were intended to assimilate Indigenous children by force, separating them from their families and cutting their ties to their own cultures.
