The world's population has reached a staggering 8 billion, according to estimates from the United Nations. One billion people have been born in the last 11 years. UN officials say the unprecedented growth boils down to two parallel trends: the gradual increase in average human longevity due to advances in public health and nutrition, personal hygiene and medicine, as well as high levels of fertility in many countries.
