June 6, 2022
A 96-year-old veteran returns to the site of one of the turning points in World War II for a Native American sage burning ceremony. Charles Shay was 19 years old when he and his fellow troops stormed the beaches of Normandy, France. Shay is a member of the Penobscot Nation and says the sage ceremony is sacred. He was a medic in the U.S. Army on that fateful day in Normandy and has performed the ritual since 2007.
