The shelter organized the photos to remind people to spay and neuter their dogs.
What’s cuter than a pregnant pit bull? The same pit bull as a mother, surrounded by her litter of puppies.
Pickles, a 2-year-old stray dog, couldn’t wait to introduce the world to her eight puppies in a sweet photo shoot taken not too long after her maternity shoot, where she showed off her full belly.
Her shelter, Pits & Giggles Rescue in Charlotte, North Carolina, worked with Enchanted Hills Photography to put together the shoot – not only to show how sweet Pickles is, but also to send a message about spaying and neutering.
“While Pickles' maternity shoot is adorable, we are hoping the message will get out there that we want our dogs to avoid this if we can,” Lauren Casteen Sykes told InsideEdition.com. “We celebrate Pickles and her babies, but our goal is to never leave a dog in the type of position Pickles was in ever again.”
While all eight pups are healthy and will be up for adoption after a period with their mama, shelter workers want to avoid their dogs getting pregnant whenever possible.
“She was bred repeatedly and her labor was long and difficult,” the photographer said. “Often after repeated breedings, mama dogs and their babies suffer terrible difficulty postpartum.”
Volunteers now hope that not only can they help the puppies be adopted at a great home, Pickles might soon find a home herself.
