Some speculate the family portrait was taken months earlier.
Prince George and Princess Charlotte are taking center stage in this year’s royal holiday card.
The photo, featuring Prince William and Duchess Kate Middleton standing behind their two young children in matching powder blue outfits, was taken by Chris Jackson, royal photographer for Getty Images, who has also photographed the family in the past.
"Delighted that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have chosen to use this family portrait I shot as their Christmas card this year — Merry Christmas!" Jackson announced.
Some speculated the photo was taken the same time as Prince George’s birthday portraits in July, since he is reportedly wearing the same suit and, despite being about five months pregnant, Middleton’s baby bump is not yet showing.
Middleton was forced to announce her pregnancy early in September after it was revealed she suffered severe morning sickness, known as hyperemesis gravidarum. She suffered from the same condition while pregnant with both George, 4, and Charlotte, 2.
After releasing the image, Kensington Palace also announced that Princess Charlotte will attend the Willcocks Nursery School in London starting January.
“We are delighted that The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have chosen the Willcocks Nursery School for Princess Charlotte. We look forward to welcoming Charlotte to our nursery in January,” the school said in a statement.
