Twenty-year-old rapper XXXTentacion was shot to death Monday in South Florida as he sat in his BMW, according to authorities.
The Broward Sheriff's Office pronounced his death at about 5:30 p.m.
The artist, whose real name was Jahseh Onfroy, was rushed to a nearby hospital after he was shot while he was out shopping for motorcycles. The attack may have been a drive-by, TMZ reported.
The rising rap star lived in a $1.4 million mansion in Parkland and had been on modified house arrest for a pending trial on charges of domestic battery, false imprisonment and aggravated battery of a pregnant woman. The charges involved his girlfriend.
He denied the charges.
A judge had recently freed him from house arrest so he could go on tour.
In March, XXXTentacion’s sophomore album “?” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart. His previous release, called “17,” landed at No. 2. His YouTube channel has more than 5 million subscribers.
The young rapper had posted a video challenge on YouTube earlier this year, asking fans to do something good to help those in need.
His career took off with a spot among XXL’s 2017 Freshman Class followed by a $6 million record deal this year. But his arrest history generated controversy and some in the industry boycotted his music because of it.
But news of his death prompted strong reactions from some fellow rappers including Kanye West and J.Cole, who called him an "enormous talent" who had a "strong desire to be a better person."
On a social media live post Monday, the rapper said, "Worse thing comes to worse, and I f***ing die ... I at least want to know that the kids perceive my message and were able to make something of themselves."
