Taylor Rice’s family had no idea he had become a Marine or that he would even be home for the holiday when he walked through the door just as everyone was preparing to have dinner.
His mom, Wendi, immediately began sobbing as the rest of their family stood in stunned silence when Rice showed up to his family’s Thanksgiving celebration, clad in his new dress blues.
“My mom was in total shock at what she was seeing as I entered the door,” Rice said in an interview with T&T Creative Media. “She immediately cried with joy.”
Rice explained that he had just graduated from the Marine Corps Boot Camp and joined the Infantry Training Battalion, but had not yet filled his parents in on the good news.
The news came as an even more sentimental surprise for his dad, who is an Army veteran.
Rice recruited his wife, Johanna, to organize the surprise and walked in just as his family was least expecting him.
Rice’s dad, who was running errands while he surprised the rest of his family, couldn’t stop smiling when he finally spotted his son in his military regalia.
“2018 was the best Thanksgiving ever,” Rice said.
