The Daily Telegraph has paid “substantial damages” and offered an apology to Melania Trump after publishing what they said were several errors in a recent story.
First lady Melania Trump is receiving "substantial damages" from a British newspaper that now admits it published a "number of false statements" about her.
"We apologize unreservedly to the first lady and her family for any embarrassment caused by our publication of these allegations," The Telegraph said in a statement. “As a mark of our regret we have agreed to pay Mrs Trump substantial damages as well as her legal costs.”
President Trump weighed in on Twitter, taking to his favorite social media platform, Sunday to say: “This is a very big deal in Europe. Fake news is the enemy of the people!”
Mrs. Trump's director of communications, Stephanie Grisham, took to Twitter Saturday to address the apology from the British news outlet.
"@FLOTUS often refers to opportunists out to advance themselves by disparaging her name&image. Mrs.Trump will not let people&media outlets make up lies&false assertions in a race for ratings or to sell tabloid headlines," Grisham tweeted.
The statement also apologized for other misinformation in the article.
“We accept that Mrs Trump was a successful professional model in her own right before she met her husband and obtained her own modelling work without his assistance. Mrs Trump met Mr Trump in 1998, not in 1996 as stated in the article,” The Telegraph said in its statement. “The article also wrongly claimed that Mrs Trump’s mother, father and sister relocated to New York in 2005 to live in buildings owned by Mr Trump. They did not. The claim that Mrs Trump cried on election night is also false.”
