Melting Glacier Reveals Wreckage of WWII-Era U.S. Plane in Swiss Alps
August 17, 2018
A melting glacier in Switzerland yielded a prize buried for more than 70 years. Receding ice from a summer heatwave revealed wreckage from a U.S. military plane. The C-53 Skytrooper crash-landed in the Bernese Alps in 1946. The crash sparked a massive rescue mission, and after nearly a week, the Dakota's eight passengers and four crew were brought out alive. Another melting glacier, in Alaska, is a grimmer site, however.
