Trial for American Journalist Detained by Russia Begins

June 27, 2024

Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich has gone on trial in Russia. The American journalist was detained in March 2023. He was in Russia covering the invasion of Ukraine for the newspaper. The FSB, Russia’s federal security service, says Gershkovich was trying to obtain military state secrets. The Wall Street Journal and the U.S. Government refute these claims. The rest of the trial will be held behind closed doors, without media, family, or representatives of the U.S. embassy.
