Dhavul Bhatt and his family recently moved to the United States from India, intentionally avoiding hospitals because of the horror stories he says he has heard about their exorbitant fees. He couldn’t do that anymore once his toddler burned his hand on a stove. They’d gone to the ER and were handed a bill for $1,012 without ever seeing a doctor.
