Woman Hospitalized With Broken Heart After Her Beloved Dog Dies

Grandmother Joanie Simpson, 62, loves her pets and was especially close to her Yorkie, named Meja. She is now at the center of a medical mystery. Joanie was home alone when Meja died of congestive heart failure at 8 years old. Joanie was grief-stricken. Four days later, Joanie was airlifted to Houston's Memorial Hermann Medical Center experiencing all the symptoms of a massive heart attack. Joanie was diagnosed with Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, or broken heart syndrome.
