Japanese Town of Noto Uses Coronavirus Relief Money to Buy Giant Squid Statue

When a town in Japan received a small financial windfall of coronavirus relief funds, it did what any of us would have done: buy a giant squid statue. The town of Noto sits on Japan’s central West Coast. Fishing is one of its main industries. The big squid is called “Squid Station.” It’s 13-feet high and 29-feet long. It cost over $200,000 -- though it’s a bargain at any price. It’s meant to drive tourism and let people know about Noto’s squid fishing.
