Wildfires Force Thousands to Evacuate
February 23, 2024
More than 2,000 people followed emergency evacuation orders to flee wildfires in Australia. Fires are spreading faster than expected through the state of Victoria. Hot weather and strong winds have created prime conditions for large bushfires to spread. Officials say homes and livestock have been lost, but they aren’t sure just how many. About 1,000 firefighters are fighting the blaze. They’re using 50 helicopters and aircraft to try to control the burn area. No injuries have been reported.
