Miner Finds Record-Breaking Tanzanite Gems Worth $3.3 Million

A man became an overnight millionaire when he mined the two largest tanzanite stones likely to ever be found. The small-scale miner from the country of Tanzania sold the gems to the government for more than seven billion Tanzanian shillings, or more than $3 million. One of the stones weighed more than 20 pounds. Tanzanite is one of the most rare gems in the world and is only found in a small northern region of the country.
